Interface and Infrastructure Design for Ubiquitous Pen- based Interaction on Paper

چکیده

One of the goals of ubiquitous computing is to allow users to naturally access various digital functions with daily physical artifacts like paper. Existing paper-digital integration systems, however, either sacrifice inherent paper flexibility or support very limited digital functionality on paper. This thesis explores how to enable rich pen-based interaction on paper without loss of the original pen-paper affordances. Such interaction paradigm imposes design challenges on the interface and infrastructure, such as weak visual feedback and varying computing resources available to mobile users. I study a) Supporting techniques and design principles, for instance, combining physical engagement, ink and pen-top multimodal feedback for digital operations on paper; b) Applications of the techniques in areas such as document reviewing, note-taking and 3D modeling to demonstrate the feasibility and usability, and to glean insights for more general use scenarios.

Pen–tablet as a CAD interface alternative

Championed by major industry players, pen–tablet computing is an example of the trend towards ubiquitous computing and natural/intuitive human machine interfaces that offers engineers opportunities to change how they interact with and how useful computers can be for performing engineering tasks, in particular, design tasks. Recognising that engineers starting a new design reach first for pen an...

An Agent-Based Architecture for a Multimodal Interface

This paper concerns a multimodal interface for designing graphics. The human-machine interaction is achieved by using a pen computer connected to a speech recognition device. The user and the computer cooperate: the user sketches graphics with the pen, the computer understands the user's intention and displays an accurate version of the hand-sketched drawing. The final document is produced sequ...

A Pilot Study of Speech and Pen User Interface For Graphical Editing

As computer size continues to decrease and new user interface technologies become more ubiquitous, the conventional keyboard and mouse input interfaces are becoming harder to design into newer machines and less practical for use in some applications. The pen is one input technology more suited for the upcoming generation of smaller computers using direct manipulation interfaces. However, a pen-...

A new modeling interface for the pen-input displays

Sketch interactions based on interpreting multiple pen markings into a 3D shape is easy to design but not to use. First of all, it is difficult for the user to memorize a complete set of pen markings for a certain 3D shape. Secondly, the system will be waiting for the user to complete the sequence of the pen markings, often causing a certain mode error. To address these problems, we present a n...
